Lake Superior Watches

·       Whitefish Point Bird Observatory  (Spring)

Located in the upper peninsula of Michigan near Paradise, MI

Whitefish Point is an excellent spring hawk watching spot with the added

bonus of seeing migrating owls, such as Great Grays, Boreal, Long-eared

and an occasional Northern Hawk Owl.

·       Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve (Fall)

Located in the northeast corner of Minnesota in Duluth.

A beautiful vista overlooking Lake Superior and the town of Duluth.

Diversity of migrating hawks and a nature preserve with trails make

this place very special.

·       Chequamegon Bay (Spring)

The Chequamegon Bay count site is located at the SW tip of Chequamegon

(sha-wah\'-ma-gun) Bay on the south shore of Lake Superior, approximately

2 miles west of Ashland, WI.  The actual count takes place from the 56 foot

observation tower at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center.

·       Brockway Mountain (Spring)

Not an official website of the hawk watch but a good description.

Brockway Mountain is perhaps the most beautiful spot in the Midwest for

hawk watching.  The views are breathtaking overlooking forestland and

spectacular views of Lake Superior.

Lake Erie Watches

·       Southeastern Michigan Raptor Research (Fall)

This hawk watch is located at Lake Erie Metro Park, which is south of

Detroit and near Flat Rock, MI.  It is a premier fall hawk watching site.

Hundreds of thousands of Broad-wingeds pass through this area annually.

·       Holiday Beach Migration Observatory (Fall)

Located in Ontario just east of Detroit.  This hawk watch is conducted from

an observation tower overlooking Lake Erie.  Nice place!

·       Crane Creek State Park (Spring)

Located east of Toledo, OH.  The hawk watch is conducted from an

observation tower which is adjacent to the parking lot.  The tower overlooks

a marsh and Lake Erie to the north.  This spot is also terrific for waterfowl

and migrating warblers with many birders claiming it is comparable,

if not better, than Point Pelee.

The hawk migration monitoring effort in northwestern Ohio is conducted by

volunteers of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory.
